You've got mail.

Don't you just love the anticipation of walking to your mailbox?

I have always just loved mail. Well, maybe not the bills, or junk mail so much, but all of the other surprises. Growing up, I had magazines I devoured as well as the occasional letter from a camp friend. At FC, mail was wonderful packages from loved ones or nice, happy notes from new friends. When we lived in Germany, mail went up another notch. We were so far away from everyone and it was before the days of email, so every letter was a cherished item. The packages held pieces of home and were to be lingered over.

Fast forward to today.

This afternoon, I go out to make my beloved trip across the street to the mailbox. It is on the ground! Again! Someone has hit our mailbox again. This is about the 4th time in a year. The first 2 times it was hit, I just rigged the old mailbox to make it another day. Even so, nearly every other day, I would have to fix the door again because a part was missing after getting so beat up. After the 3rd time of being knocked completely off, the mailbox just couldn't make it anymore. We purchased a new one and today I find it on the ground. Luckily, my husband had the foresight to purchase a plastic one that can snap back in place, so the repair was quick. But, I am fed up...and now I'm excited too!

I called the post office and they have promised to work with us to possibly move it to our driveway. This was easier than I anticipated - we'll see how it works out. My kids are thrilled at the prospect of being able to check the mailbox, or to put the flag up when they send a letter. Always before, they had to stand safely in our yard as Mom braved the dangerous trail to the box. (Yes, it is dangerous to stand on our road - I've nearly been hit 3 times. We are at the top of hill in one direction and you cannot hear the cars ahead of time.) I think we will all benefit from this and I am so excited! (Yes, I lead a dull life! Or, you could say I find joy in all the little things! ;-) )

So, who's ready to write us a letter, a card, send a package???? We will be standing in our yard waiting....

Clarification: Our mailbox isn't being knocked down by kids with bats or anything. People hit it with their cars as they come up the hill. We have no land to put the post in except in the ditch and it just never is far enough off the road. I do wonder how many people have messed up their cars on our mailbox, but only one lady ever came to our door and let us know this happened.
